Sold my MacBook Air Rev A

I sold and shipped my MacBook Air Rev A 1.6GHz 80GB. I’m planning on heading to the Apple Store later this week and pick out my next laptop. If I do get the Rev B Macbook Air, I’m going to spring for the SSD model. Because of the price similarity, I would also have to consider the new MacBook Pro. I know, I know, two very different computers. I’ll spend the next few days thinking about how I’m going to be using the next laptop.

Using Silverlight to watch Netflix on my Hackintosh

As some of you may know, Mac Netflix users can opt-in to finally stream available movies using the Netflix movie player. If you haven’t yet, you can opt-in here:

The player works fine on my MacBook Air and my black MacBook. However, I had some problems getting the Silverlight installer to install on my Hackintosh. For some reason, the Silverlight installer views my Hackintosh as a PowerPC and refuses to proceed with the installation. Clearly, that’s incorrect, as I have an Intel-based processor (Quad Core Q6600). Over on the InsanelyMac forums, user critic81 found a way to bypass the installation check and user TinFoil updated the actual downloadable installer so that Silverlight can install. Unfortunately, the Netflix movie player requires a more recent version of Silverlight. I took the new installation package and modified it with critic81’s InstallationScript.

I uploaded it to rapidshare and you can download it here:

Poladroid

Saw this over at TUAW. Poladroid makes Polaroid-esque pictures from your existing Photo Library. Just drag your picture onto the application and you’ll hear the old Polaroid sound and out comes your picture. You can sit there and let it develop, or you could shake it around on your screen. The shaking motion would feel much better if this were on the iPhone, rather than using your mouse. Either way, the application gives you nice Polaroid-style pictures that you can save. The finished pics obviously include the border. It’d be nice if the devs would allow you to change the develop time or select the area of the picture to be used. I’m sure those features will be upcoming. Either way, check it out. Mac only, though it looks like a Windows version is coming soon.

Dual 24-inch monitors or one 30-inch monitor?

I added a second 24-inch monitor (Dell 2408WFP) to accompany my lonely Dell 2407WFP. Yeah, the colors don’t really match up, but I used some calibration software to get pretty close. At least the exteriors look visually similar. A nice touch on my 2408WFP compared to my 2407WFP is that it has DisplayPort and HDMI.

After setting up the monitors side-by-side, I am frankly overwhelmed. I feel like there might be TOO much horizontal real estate, like, uh, 3840 pixels worth, while I don’t have enough vertical real estate. I remember feeling similarly awed when I upgraded from my 19″ 1280×1024 to my first 24″ 1920×1200. However, I got used to that feeling really quickly. I am still not used to there being so much head-turning to see two monitors. I do like the idea of having two monitors, and it’s great to be able to separate my workspaces with a distinct physical separation. However, it feels like there is way too much visual information for me to process and it might be time to downsize (is that even the proper term) to one 30-inch.

I’ll give it another week or two and post my impressions then. Any thoughts out there in internetland?
